Whitby town a day out

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Powerchair

Overview

The town itself is very picturesque. there are cobbles but in general it has a high percentage of accessible shops and cafe's. the great thing for me was the fact that you can access a large percentage of the harbor wall and see the boats and the day trips going in and out. The seagulls are noisy but better than at a lot of seaside places I have visited. There is a long tarmacked walk along the sea front both on the cliff top and also by the beach. The lower one almost reaches Sands End, so a good blow on a windy day. The tourist information center staff were excellent and very helpful. a lot of the cafe's and of course the fish and chip shops were accessible as well. we did not stay there but outside Whitby so I do not know about the hotels and guest houses.

Transport & Parking

4.5

Disabled designated bays have a time limit allocated and marked on the signs, up to three hours only. You can park all day free in the pay and display and they have a park and ride system too but I didn't use that so I do not know if they are accessible buses. The towns pavements are good but there are cobbled streets in a lot of places so I used pavements a lot.

Access

If you want to explore the town there are as usual a fair percentage of places with steps and some of the streets are very steep, I have a powerchair so not a problem. People in general were very good about giving way and there were not large numbers of shop stands on the pavements. We had a good day.

Toilets

4.5

There were several around the town and on the paths along the side of the beach and the path along the top of the cliff. All Radar key and very clean, not in high season when I visited.

Staff

3.5

Shop holders and tourist info staff very helpful as were the residents we talked to.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

we had good weather so did not visit many tourist sites but most declared they were accessible and had ramps on view but the tourist office staff would know.
