What does it mean? Every day around 1,400 children die due to diarrhoea caused by a lack of access to safe toilets and clean water. Women and girls living without toilets spend 97 billion hours a year walking to unhealthy and sometimes unsafe locations to defecate. Only 45% of schools in the least developed and low-income countries have adequate sanitation facilities. 1 out of 3 women worldwide risk shame, harassment and even attack because she has nowhere safe to go to the toilet. Health problems. In many cultures, girls and women wait until after dark to defecate. Women often refrain from drinking so that they do not have to urinate. This practice leads to severe health consequences such as bladder infections, constipation or kidney problems.
