Overview

Over 20 years we have stayed in many (as advertised) cottages adapted for the disabled. Sadly more often than not, I find myself saying "I wonder if the owners sought the advice of a disabled person when designing, selecting and positioning furniture etc.? Did they observe a wheelchair user negotiate themselves inside the property?" Finally in Brickhouse Farm Cottages we found somewhere that merited "A gold star" for planning interior design, positioning of furnishings and availability of "extras" As we were leaving four new cottages had just been completed. The location makes it an ideal centre for visiting the many attractions around. Blackpool is 11 miles, there are several attractive beaches with promenades and inland, country parks and beautiful moorland scenery

Access

Understandably only certain cottages are available for dog owners. The complex faces a lake (fishing available) each cottage has a front patio area, with outdoor seating for warmer weather. The Main living area is open plan, kitchen with built in appliances and accessible from a wheelchair, a large dining table central with ample space all around it and lounge with TV. Everywhere was brightly decorated with extra special touches to make it homely and inviting. Brickhouse farm cottages provide another thoughtful and alternative option, something rarely found in this guise :- family members and carers together, I know from experience how special this type of holiday can be.

The Main Bedroom with en-suite wet-room (probably the best I can recall, always hot water, surfaces to accommodate toiletries etc. (a major fault I find in holiday wet rooms)

We received a warm welcome and found staff attentive and anxious to sort out any queries whenever we asked.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

We took the opportunity presented us by our charity DogAid when invited to support their involvement in a special event to "celebrate working dogs" in Blackpool at the beginning of February, to search for self-catering accommodation for a week to explore that area of Lancashire, unfamiliar to us. |Weather-wise it was a disaster, the same week that storm Katie hit the N.W coast, strong winds and heavy rain on already saturated ground, so full praise for, and highly recommending our accommodation must come from the heart. With both of us in our 70's, I have used a wheelchair for twenty years, as a result of serious injuries in a RTA. In 2015 a bad fall onto my back fractured a vertebrae leaving me wheelchair dependent, loss of balance and lack of power in my arms. My Husband as my main carer, has some help from my third assistance dog still in training, plus we have his father.
