Well-lit interesting gallery

Overview

Edinburgh Printmakers is a curious space with lots going on. There are plenty of sights and sounds to grab the attention, and the shop downstairs is filled with interesting gifts and artwork. Unfortunately, the venue is not wheelchair accessible, but they have made efforts to include large print information, visual displays and gallery tours.

Transport & Parking

2

Edinburgh Printmakers is currently in a difficult location (it will be relocating in 2018 I believe), albeit a lovely building. Union Street where it is located is a steeply sloping hill with cobblestones, and parking in the area is tricky. There are plenty of buses on Leith Walk which is only a minute's walk from the gallery.

Access

3

Due to the difficult nature of the street and the building itself, Edinburgh Printmakers is does not have level or step-free access. There is one step into the building, and while there is a spacious enough shop and studio on the ground floor; the exhibition space is up a narrow flight of stairs. The shop and gallery are very well-lit however, and upstairs the exhibition space is extremely spacious. There are clearly marked large print copies of exhibition material, and if you're there at the right time you might get treated to a demonstration by the current artist as I did! This exhibition I attended also had a TV screen (no sound) showing the artist at work. The great thing about this gallery is that all of the floors are wooden and there are little or no glaring reflective surfaces. Upstairs there is also a large viewing window into the studio below which is a fascinating place to see the printmakers at work.

Toilets

1

There are visitor toilets upstairs which I did not use, but they had a very narrow door. They were easily identifiable however.

Staff

5

Staff here are very friendly and helpful. While not a staff member (presumably), the artist whose exhibition was on at my time of visiting kindly demonstrated laser cutting as he worked.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

While this exhibition space is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible in the building it currently exists in, it is a great place to explore with thought given to visitor requirements as much as possible. I was surprised to even find a toilet in this building (even though it is not very accessible), and there were easily identifiable large print versions of exhibition print on the way in.

Photos

View of the studio. Exhibition interpretation, including large print. Spacious gallery with bright lighting and TV screen. Where the artist demonstrated his work.
