Venue Description

Summerhall presents engaging, challenging, high-quality theatre, dance, literature, visual art and music for people of all ages. Our unique home in the former Dick Vet building of the University of Edinburgh offers atmospheric performance spaces, a buzzy courtyard and an onsite pub, the Royal Dick Bar, with something for everyone to explore, discover and enjoy. Open year round, in August we are Fringe Venue 26 - “an entire festival in its own right” The Guardian. Food and drink are available year-round from The Royal Dick Bar and Restaurant and from the MF coffee shop – with extended opening hours and extra street food pop-up stalls in the Courtyard during Edinburgh's August festival season.

Accessibility

We are committed to making your visit to Summerhall an enjoyable experience and we are working to make our venue as accessible as possible - however, the building is B-listed and over one hundred years old and not all of our spaces are fully accessible. step-free / ramped access to Summerhall is through the side entrance on Summerhall Square, which leads into the main courtyard. Outside the hours of 10.00–18.00, there is an entry intercom that can be used to connect to our reception team. From the courtyard, there is ramped access to our reception, box office and cafe. We have lift access to some 1st floor & basement spaces/venues/galleries. The Royal Dick bar has ramped access at the back of the bar building, in the main couryard.

Accessible Performances

Summerhall offers accessible performances - including BSL interpretation, audio description and Relaxed performances. Please check our website or phone the box office for more information.

Toilets

The main building has an accessible toilet on the ground floor (near MF coffee shop), which is accessible via the ramped access from the courtyard. The main building also has an accessible toilet on the first floor (next to the Main Hall), which can be reached via lift access. The Royal Dick bar has an accessible toilet, with ramped access to the bar.

Summerhall is a dog-friendly venue. Dogs are welcome, on leads, in our courtyard and ground-floor café. Dogs can be exercised in the Meadows park over the road from Summerhall.
