Visit date:

Overview

It is clear York library has considered and caters for a variety of peoples needs. There are several accessible amenities for service users with disabilities; ranging from the books to the buildings facility's.

Transport & Parking

3

Driving, travel by car: There are 2 parking bays for blue badge holders that are using the library, with a maximum stay of 2 hours. You do not need to book in advance to park. The bays are outside the library entrance, meaning there is no road to cross from the car park to the entrance. The surface is tarmac and level, consequently it is suitable for wheelchair users. Public transport: There is a bus stop just a a minute round the corner from the library's entrance.

Access

4.5

. When entering the building there is a permanent slope/ramp and an automatic sliding door for easy accessibility. The ramp has handrails on both sides and leads to a level open foyer. . The bottom floor is all level and each room leads off from the foyer. To the right of the foyer is the lift to access higher floors. . There is an EVAC Chair for people with mobility impairments in the event of a fire. . There is a disabled refuge point. . The reception of the library has a desk for anyone with questions and queries. The desk has a low section, which is suitable for a wheelchair user. . The library offers braille, large print, audio and dyslexia-friendly books. . The library offers a cafe, that has a lower section of the counter.

Toilets

4.5

Coming out of the lift upstairs, there is a disabled toilet. To gain access to the toilet, a key from reception is required. The toilet door is light to open, has a handle lock and inside there is sufficient room to transfer. The toilet offers a rail and a drop down rail either side of the toilet to assist transfers, a sanitary disposal bin and a large mirror, a low level sink with a lever tap and an emergency alarm pull cord. There is a changing room specifically designated for people with a disability. Unfortunately the date i went, it was out of use as it is under construction. Although it will be completed in the near future.

Staff

I asked several staff questions about accessibility and everyone was happy to take time to talk to me and discuss what the library has to offer.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I recommend the library as it accessible and has may useful amenities. Particular the designated changing room for people with disabilities, i have rarely come across these and believe once it is complete it will be extremely helpful and appreciated. The car park would be better if there was more room for more vehicles. An easily accessible seating area with room for mobility scooters and wheelchairs would also be appreciated.
