Euan's Guide calls on public to help make 100% of disabled toilets safer for World Toilet Day.

The disabled access charity Euan’s Guide is appealing to the general public to help it make disabled toilets safer. As featured on Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show, the charity is printing thousands of life-saving postcards to stop people from tucking away the red cord in disabled loos.

Disabled toilets are often frequented by cleaners or parents using baby-change tables and the cord maybe moved to mop the floor or tucked out of reach of children’s hands. Often the pull-cord is tied out of the way or viewed as a ‘nuisance’ to those unaware of its function but it is a lifeline to allow disabled people to call for help in an emergency.

Following a huge surge of support from Radio 2 listeners, over 40,000 postcards have been requested in total. The pocket-sized card is designed to be attached to the emergency cord and carries a clear message: “This red emergency cord must hang freely all the way to the floor. If it does not, it may prevent a disabled person from asking for help.”

Now Euan’s Guide is calling on the public to help it achieve its target of making every disabled toilet in the UK safer by World Toilet Day on 19th November by ordering the postcards and attaching them to red cords in accessible toilets. It will be the be the biggest ever campaign to physically improve safety for disabled people without requiring any kind of construction or building alteration.

Euan MacDonald, co-founder of Euan’s Guide said: “We want a Red Cord Card in every accessible toilet in the UK. If a cord is tied up, wound around grab rails or cut short it prevents a disabled person calling for help. Please free the cords when you see them tied up and place a Euan’s Guide Red Cord Card on them. It may seem like a small thing but it is often the small things in life that make things so much easier for disabled people.”
