Outdoors - Chapter 4

Lavender Cottage, Accessible and dog friendly cottage, not perfect

3

Visit date:

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Walking Aid, Wheelchair

Overview

It was good to find somewhere accessible for me and where I could bring my furry friend. Unfortunately, despite some nice touches, the accommodation had some drawbacks. Though for other people, these may not be an issue especially if you're aware in advance.there are four cottages in all here - maybe one of the others would have suited our party of four (me disabled, husband plus two 80+ in laws)

Transport & Parking

We could park right outside the cottage. Not sure how close the bus comes to this site, but there's a long drive from the road to the cottage in any case. The parking area is level and smooth.

Access

3

There is level access throughout. However if on foot you need to be aware of a hefty metal threshold bar which my wheeled walker really struggled with. There are a couple of bumps under the flooring in the hallway and dining room which need care taking with. Other than that the whole place is level and easy to negotiate. Whilst I wasn't in my wheelchair inside the cottage,it looked like there was ample room to manoeuvre onside. Doorways looked quite wide though I didn't check if they were wide enough (though I noted comments from chair users in the visitors book so clearly wheelchairs had been used there). My other concern, which is reflected in the rating, is the kitchen layout. When adding an extension, a run of work surface has been removed meaning the sink is some distance from the stove with no work top. So hot pans have to be carried across the room to be drained, kettle carried across to the tap to fill it, clean crockery ferried across to the cupboard - all without an work top to put things on or slide things across. As a disabled person it was hard for me to help in the kitchen at all. Also tricky for our elderly relatives.

Toilets

One of the reasons I chose this place was the wet room. The loo has a drop down grab rail and a small wall mounted vertical bar - all good. However the shower seat's prominent metal bar really dug into my legs. It had no side handles or back - not a problem for me but others might need more support. There was a large vertical grab rail on the wall to one side and a small one to the other. The biggest concern for me was the tiled floor - it could be slippery. I would have worried about using crutches or stick to walk to the loo (my walker was fine). Shower floor needed care after showering.

Staff

When enquiring and making my booking, the lady concerned was fantastic. The person who visited when we first arrived only spoke about the recycling.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

There is no doubt that accessibility is good here, albeit with some reservations about the wet room and the kitchen layout. Sadly the decor is also tired and dated which didn't give a good impression either. However others may not be concerned about that. There were some nice touches - patio table/bench with provision for wheelchair, electric profile bed, electric rise/recliner chair. There was a shared garden but sadly too far away (across the car park) for me to get to. There is a patio by the door though not enclosed.
