An atmospheric fortress

Visit date:

Overview

Castel Sant'Angelo is an impressive looking fortress sitting by the River Tiber. The castle is clearly ancient and it is by no means 100% accessible, but they have tried to make access easier in large parts of the attraction.

Transport & Parking

3.5

We walked to the castle over a wide pedestrianised bridge which was an ideal way to approach it to see its facade. There is a road access beside the castle where a taxi could drop you off quite easily.

Access

3.5

Access was better than expected in places, but there is still quite a bit of room for improvement. Signage started off very well, but then it became very difficult to navigate the castle and to find directions to accessible routes. There were wide sturdy ramps in place around much of the building which were great for accessing viewpoints. There were also multiple staff lifts which allow step-free access to different areas. The major downside of this is the presence of staff...I saw quite a few staff members but not enough to allow smooth transition between different parts of the castle. We also came across one stair lift to take visitors from the basement of the castle back to the entrance. Some of the surfaces were a bit bumpy too. Lighting was quite dim throughout, but we did visit in the evening.

Toilets

0

I didn't use the toilets on this visit, but accessible toilets were clearly signed at the main entrance. After this, as I said, signage diminished. We weren't using an attraction map however, so it may have been easier with that.

Staff

2.5

Staff were polite but not exceptionally friendly or enthusiastic. That was at the desk and in the cafe.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

It's a fascinating building, and a great place to take in views of the city. When we visited, they were leaving the castle open to visitors till 11pm at night I believe. We visited around 9-10pm.
