Overview

This is regarded as one of the best little towns in the Cotswolds. High Street itself is still thought to be one of the most beautiful streets in the county today, and well worth just strolling along to see what you can learn, and to find its pleasant little shops, and many hotels such as the “Noel Arms”. Just past the “market hall” (photo 17) used today by many locals selling their wares in the historical market hall (photo 18) there by is a lovely honey coloured row of Cotswold houses and shops (photo 19) leading us towards the Cotswold terrace homes of the beautiful local honey coloured stone that is famous in the Cotswolds (Photo 20) and we just mention that many of these were built before the late 1700’s of a box timber frame with wattle and daub, (that is wooden frames filled in with a mix of mud, stone, timber strips and even manure, to form a paste like plaster to use to fill in the gaps ) but from the late 1700’s they were refronted in stone work. There was a window tax law introduced in 1696, and one way out of paying to much tax was to build the window frames in a house, closer than 12 inches apart, which meant they could be counted as “one window” thus saving tax payment on paying for two windows, and you can see examples of these house windows along this portion of High Street (photo 21) Many houses here in Chipping Campden are of Georgian style (photo 22) very fashionable at this time period, and when walking around, if you look closely you will see many nice little features along the house fronts, such as “ horns” at each end of the window sill, which in fact even added strength to the sill. High street is a delightful walk, passing small independent shops, three storey houses, high sloping roofs, and all in that honey coloured stone. Transport & Parking

This is a busy tourist spot, with only a small car park on its High Street, although parking on the street is allowed. If you see a spot, pull in, do not miss it or you may struggle to find another spot.

Access

The town area is very much on the level, but up and down on its pavements, but you will cope. Almost all shops and hotels have steps to worry about, it’s an old town.
