Overview

Gare du Sud is Nice's former station. Originally built in 1892, it has been transformed into a food court. The former train shed provides an impressive interior with its high ceiling, cast iron and glass panels and decorated with plants, it makes an inviting place to dine. The 20 + stalls offer a wide choice of world cuisine from cakes and coffee to local niçois specialities, lobster, burgers, Tex Mex, Scandinavian Smørrebrød, Italian, Thai, Japanese street food, gelato, etc. There is also a bar. It is self service. It's very accessible as it is step free and has an accessible toilet.

Transport & Parking

The building is opposite the Liberation tram stop on Line 1, which provides step free public transport to Gare Du Sud. There are also buses that stop nearby.

Access

There is both steps with handrails or a ramp to the entrance of Gare du Sud. The entrance door was already open so I could walk right through. Once inside their is a foyer with a library and an exhibition space, but I didn't look at these. Instead I walked into the main hall with its food court. There are free standing tables and chairs in the centre and round the edges of the room are food stalls. The stalls are at standing height. There is also a mezzanine level which is accessible by stairs with handrails or a lift. The upper floor has some more food stalls as well as some small shops selling vintage clothing and local produce.

Toilets

There was an accessible toilet cubicle in the ladies toilets. It was spacious and clean. There was a single grab rail and a small sink. The men's toilets I think also have an accessible toilet inside. It was wonderful having an accessible toilet where I ate. It meant I didn't have to rush back to my hotel in case I needed the toilet, instead I could take my time and relax.

Staff

The only staff I interacted with where the people serving the food and that was very postive. Although the venue is self service I was given a beeper and they offered to bring my food to me.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Gare du Sud only opened in May 2019 and it is a real find. It's very easy to get to by tram but it is not located in the main tourist area. This meant that it has a local vibe, primarily catering for local people rather than being touristy. I went mid afternoon for a late lunch and it was busy with family groups and groups of friends. It wasn't noisy but there was a definite buzz. It has a lovely feel to the place, the food is delicious, there is plenty of choice and it's somewhere to chill out. I loved it and can't wait to return next time I'm in Nice.
