Excellent
The National Rail Museum at Shildon is "sister" to the NRM in York and as such has many interesting exhibits together with some Steam Locomotive "visitors", e.g Flying Scotsman. The lower car park has spaces for Disabled visitors and the whole museum is on the level, except for a couple of elevated areas which are easily "climbed" There is a shop and a cafe and two sets of Disabled Toilets which are easily accessed and spotlessly clean. Entry is free but there are Donation boxes at the doors The staff are all very pleasant and helpful.
Disabled Access In and Around
Excellent
The direction signs are clear and informative, there are no steps and no need for a lift. The museum is so designed that you can see anything you want and there is adequate seating if you need a rest.
Parking & Transport
Excellent
The best way to reach the museum is by car and there are Disabled Spaces " in the lower car park. I would not recommend using public transport.
Accessible Toilets
Excellent
The accessible loos were easily reached and very clean. There is room for a wheelchair to maneuver but possibly the floor area is a little small for large wheelchairs. The toilets were very clean and there are grab bars.
Staff
Excellent
All staff are helpful and willing to give you advice on the best way to see round the Museum. On "steam " days, "model rail" displays and other special days it can get very busy but the staff will always do their best to help you if you have any difficulty.

I strongly recommend the Museum and there is something for everyone. The best way of finding out about the different events is to use their website and join the Newsletter.
