Overview

The Opera House which dates back to the 1880s, is ornate and opulent. I went to attend a ballet performance.

Transport & Parking

The Opera House is in Vieux Nice, the old town, and it's entrance is one block away from the sea front, where several buses stop close by.

Access

0

There is step free access at the entrance. On the left as you enter there is a passageway to the accessible toilet and lift. The lift is a fair size and can easily accomodate a wheelchair user, however at the end of the performance the lifts are very busy and crowded. However Opera staff are outside the lift and ensure that wheelchair users are prioritised. Some of the floors have accessible toilets. As there was no accessible information that I could find on the Opera House's website I booked a 1st floor seat in one of the boxes on the right hand side facing the stage. This meant that when I got out the lift I had to go down some stairs and up the otherside to get to my seat. This was do-able but if I had known I would have booked a seat on the same side as the lift to save me doing that as the theatre was busy. Sitting in the box worked very well for me. There was a double door to enter and I was able to lean my crutch against the wall next to me. There were 5 seats in the box of which only 3 were occupied. I was in the 2nd box from the stage but it meant that from where I was sitting I didn't have full view of the stage, but this was only a problem occassionally. There was an interval and I went to the bar. It was quite crowded so i had to wait a while to be served. I'm not sure if you can pre-order your drinks. As well as selling drinks they also sold Madeleines (cakes). You could not take your drinks back to the box. I managed to find a seat away from the bar area.

Toilets

There was an accessible toilet on the ground floorand as the lift stopped going up I think I noticed signs to some others.

Staff

On arrival staff checked your tickets at the door and gave directions of where to go. The bar was busy at the interval but service was good. On the way out, going down in the lift there were staff gate keeping it to prioritise it for people with disabailities.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The whole experience was a real treat. The ballet itself was lovely but the Opera Building is magnificent. My seat in the box cost 40 euros (2018) which compared to theatre in London I thought it was good value for money. I was pleasantly suprised about how good the access was at the Opera House and I hope to visit again in the future. highly recommend.
