Overview
By far the best experience of my holiday to Gran Canaria even though there are obvious problems which would make it difficult for a wheelchair user to access. For me personally, I was really excited about seeing the birds of pray show but was left disappointed as i couldn't see the birds so we decided to go and watch the dolphin show and I wasn't disappointed. Absolutely amazing staff who work so hard to make your visit enjoyable. Great view of the dolphin show, stunning scenery and getting to meet the dolphins was just the cherry on the cake
Transport & Parking
We arrived by taxi but I did notice that there are 3 disabled spaces close to the main reception and another 3 disabled spaces about 50 meters away from the reception.
Access
This is where the zoo really lets itself down. I would say that Palmitos Park isn't wheelchair accessible and would be extremely difficult to get around Palmitos Park on your own as in order to get the stunning scenery that the zoo has, the zoo has to be on a hill. Of course that means that there is slopes, bumps and bad surfaces, so bad that there is a 85 degree slope to go up so my mobility scooters power switched off.
Toilets
There are disabled toilets so I guess that is a positive. Terrible, but there's disabled toilets.
Staff
We met a member of staff called Suzanne at the dolphin show and she was so helpful to me and my family. She greeted us and asked if I wanted to be lifted from the ground floor up a level in order to view the dolphin show better and I said no but she went away and got 2 security boys so I felt more comfortable in asking if they could lift me up so they lifted me up and the view was perfect. There was none of this writing 300 letters to speak to health & safety to see if you could lift a wheelchair like you get in Scotland, they just done it. Also, the Spanish security guard was impressed with my brothers Spanish shirt "SPANIREDDD!!". Also, a member of staff said "You're so white!" thanks for reminding me about the snow back home :)
Anything else you wish to tell us?
They have big mobility scooters that you can hire from the reception which I would recommend for a older couple visiting who may not have there own mobility equipment and who may struggle with the steep hills. The food is a rip off, save your money.
