Beautiful gardens and good accessibility

4.5

Visit date:

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Powerchair

Overview

The gardens of Walmer Castle are quite extensive and well kept. There are pathways running throughout which are mostly smooth. I could get around pretty much everywhere apart from into a former quarry pit which was down some steps and there was no ramp. But I looked down on it from a higher land. Everyone wore masks in the cafe and the doors were open to provide ventilation.

Transport & Parking

There was quite a lot of parking which was nearby the entrance.

Access

4.5

I was able to get around everywhere in the gardens in my powerchair, apart from one place. This place was a former quarry pit that had been converted into a garden and could only be accessed by steps. However, I could look down into it from higher ground. The paths were mostly flat however some of them were gravel or woodchip covered. There were some large grass-covered areas as well which were flat and easy to drive over. There were some steps around the garden but they could usually be avoided by going around the different route. I was also able to get down into the moat by a paved ramp. The ground of the moat was grass covered which I could get all around no problem.

Toilets

Accessible toilets are available but I can't remember exactly what they were like.

Staff

5

The staff were friendly and helpful. They directed us where to go and how to get tickets.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

You need to book your tickets online and select a time slot. They are limiting the number of people that can visit at any one time so that people can social distance. The staff at the entrance were sat outside with tables in front of them to create a distance between them and the visitors which was good. In the cafe all the staff were wearing face masks and there were signs telling people that they have to wear a mask when they go in the cafe. The doors were open which provided good ventilation
