To mark Changing Places Awareness Day 2023, we’re highlighting why Changing Places facilities are so important, and asking people to review their favourite Changing Places loos on EuansGuide.com.

The 19 July is an annual day of awareness to celebrate the launch of the Changing Places campaign, when it all began back in July 2006. It’s a chance to recognise and share the achievements of those behind the campaign, pushing for changes to accessible toilets that are designed for people with more complex access requirements.

Over a quarter of million people in the UK need Changing Places Toilets to enable them to get out and about and enjoy the day-to-day activities which many of us take for granted. To use a toilet in safety and comfort, many people need to be able to access a Changing Places Toilet, which has more space and the right equipment, including a height adjustable changing bench, a peninsular toilet and a celling hoist. Changing Places toilets are important for people with limited mobility, and who may depend on carers for support to use a toilet.

The campaign advocates for the rights of disabled people with complex access requirements, as they believe that everyone deserves a clean, sanitary place to go to the toilet. Horror stories about people having to be changed on the toilet floor due to a public venue not having a Changing Places toilet or the equipment they need to use the facilities confidently are unfortunately common experiences for disabled people. The implementation of Changing Places toilets ensures that this will not happen to anyone else.

Knowing that a venue has a Changing Places toilet empowers those with disabilities to visit places they haven’t been to before, places they wouldn’t have gone if the venue didn’t have these facilities.

Currently, the total number of registered Changing Places toilets is 1,897. If you want to check if there is a Changing Places toilet near you, the Changing Places team has created a great resource where you can find one, you can find it here. You can use the Changing Places map to find a toilet and plan your route to the venue.

We’re proud to include Changing Places toilets in our reviews and venue listings on EuansGuide.com.

Please review your favourite venues with Changing Places facilities as well as any new ones you visit – it’s important to keep them up to date so our community can hear from other disabled people what to expect when they visit.

We’re also asking venues with Changing Places facilities to shout about them! Please list your venue on EuansGuide.com where tens of thousands of disabled people find and share disabled access information every month.
