Venue Description

Defended by a magnificent curtain wall and an iron yet, Balvenie was a stronghold of the powerful Black Comyns, rivals to Robert the Bruce in the early 1300s. It ultimately became the Renaissance residence of the Earls of Atholl, who built the Atholl Lodging with its grand circular tower. 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Wed to Sun, 10am to 4.30pm Last entry 4pm Closed for lunch 12 noon to 1pm. 1 Oct to 28 Mar: Closed

Accessibility

Approach to site The car park is adjacent to the ticket office. The castle is then 40m across a hard level surface and 25m over cobbles. Visitor Centre Access into the shop is up two short ramps. Monument The ground level of the castle has generally uneven surfaces, and includes the bakehouse, servants’ quarters and storage cellars. Light levels in these rooms can be low. The castle’s upper levels are accessed via a stone spiral staircase with 38 steps.
