Venue Description

There is currently no visitor access to the museum building and the inside of the furnace. Once a place of fire and fury, the most complete charcoal-fuelled ironworks in Britain are now tranquil. Step inside the stone furnace complex and storage buildings of this pioneering 18th century site and discover the Highlands' role in the Industrial Revolution. The furnace only ceased firing in 1870. 1 Apr to 30 Sept: Daily, 9.30am to 5pm, last entry 4pm. (closed for lunch 12.30pm-1pm)

Accessibility

Approach to site Visitors approach the site along a gravel-surfaced path. Visitor Centre The shop has step-free access. Monument Bonawe is on a hill. The main circular route round the buildings is on gravel and grass surfaces and is approximately 250m. The ground is uneven in places. The main exhibition room has a set of eight wooden stairs with handrails on both sides, joining two levels. Both levels can be accessed from outside without using the stairs.
