Overview

The Headland at Burghead is an open, grassland and rocky peninsular. Once a Pict Fort, the mounds and plateau link the site to days gone by. A whitewashed Visitor Centre tells more of the story as well as that of the fishing heritage of the village. You can park at the far end of the open area and a paved pathway leads to the visitor centre. You can walk beyond this over the grassland to take in the views of the rocks, the fort contours and the rolling of the waves as they hit the headland.

Transport & Parking

4

Parking is very good as you can drive to the site entrance and then use the trackway to get close to the visitor centre. The site is a natural headland so it is a little lumpy and bumpy in places with so areas where you need to be able to to climb the steps or scrabble up the bank. That said, a slabbed pathway leads from the parking area up to the visitor centre.

Access

4

The access is surprisingly good as a wheelchair user. You can wheel across the flat grassland area quite easily and get some spectacular views out to sea and over the village and the busy harbour. A slabbed pathway takes you to the visitor centre which is accessible. You can also walk beyond the centre and on to the grassland of the headland. It is a bit lumpy in places but with care you can get some great views out to sea and along the coast. More ambulant visitors can climb the steps and go up to the viewing point about the visitor centre.

Toilets

There is a toilet in the Visitor Centre but I didn't use it.

Staff

The visitor centre staff / volunteers were great, welcoming and pleased to be able to share the heritage and history of the the Fort and the village.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Something different to visit and a great connection to the times of the Vikings and other skirmishes and battles.
