Venue Description

The Byre Theatre has been part of the fabric of St Andrews for nearly 80 years and part of the University since 2014. It is an award-winning building, with a 216 seat auditorium, 80 seat studio theatre and a 30 seat conference room. The Byre is a vibrant arts hub, recognised as a valued part of the national cultural infrastructure, presenting a diverse range of professional touring performances of theatre, dance, opera and music for a broad range of audiences. The Byre also produces Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews, leads the national St Andrews Playwriting Award and produces its renowned annual pantomime with Bard In The Botanics, featuring a local youth cast who work alongside the professional cast and creative team.

Accessible Performances

British Sign Language Interpretation is available for some performances and screenings. Captioned Performances are available for some performances and screenings. Relaxed performances are sometimes available for anyone who benefits from a more relaxed performance environment – including those with an autistic spectrum condition or learning disability. These performances are open to everyone, but the environment has been specifically adapted for families with children with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, individuals with sensory and communication disorders, those with learning disabilities, people living with dementia and anyone who benefits from a more relaxed environment. When available, these performances are indicated on the website and you can also ask by email at byreboxoffice@st-andrews.ac.uk or call the box office on 01334 475 000 during opening hours. Please let Box Office know when booking your ticket and we will find the best available seats for you to see the professional interpreter and/or captioner. Toilets

There are accessible toilets on Level 1 and level 4 and a lift connects all floors of the building. There are also accessible toilets back stage for performers, crew and other team members.

Staff

Byre staff and volunteers are welcoming and friendly. There is always a first aider on site during opening hours and most of the team are trained in disability awareness, autism awareness with Autism Scotland and the venue is Dementia Friendly, working closely with our colleague Dr Maggie Ellis of the School of Psychology & Neuroscience, University of St Andrews, to continually develop this aspect of what we do.
