Overview

Good accessibility for wheelchair users throughout the shop, which is all at ground floor level. Well worth a visit.

Transport & Parking

Tottenham Court Road tube station is step-free street to train (Northern Line), street to platform (Central Line) and is just a few blocks away. Green Park station is fully step-free and is a short bus-ride away, in Piccadilly. Several bus routes will drop you off at Cambridge Circus, which is quite near.

Access

4.5

There is a big step at the entrance. When staff saw me outside, they conferred briefly and without me having to ask they brought a fine, lightweight, portable aluminium ramp, fully fit-for-purpose, and I was easily able to enter the shop, which is a split-level structure on the ground floor, with a large ramped area leading to the slightly higher level, all of it easily accessible by wheelchair users. One small caveat: beware of the sudden drop in floor level, a kind of cliff on the large ramped area, where the clothes racks are, it would be possible to fall down it if you got too close to the edge.

This is not the kind of shop where I would expect to find any sort of toilet.

Friendly, helpful, not intrusively so, a good balance.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I have had to campaign for a couple of years to get this shop to provide step-free access for wheelchair users, and I'm pleased to be able to report that they have finally managed to acquire a ramp and provide access for wheelchair users. It had been quite a battle to persuade the exceptionally rude and condescending manageress, in early 2017, that it was a legal obligation to provide access for disabled customers, and it took a couple of stern letters to head office before action was taken: even then, the shop did not meet the deadline originally promised by head office for provision of a ramp, so it has been a long and frustrating wait. Well done, Carhartt, you have got it right in the end.
