Overview
Clean Prose is London’s first co-working space designed specifically for writers plus it hosts special events. I visited to attend their Whodunnit event.
Transport & Parking
The nearest tube station is Old Street which does not have step free access. There are several buses that stop close by. On option would be to take the bus number 205 from King's Cross tube station, which has step free access, or Liverpool Street Station tube which has some but not total step free access.
Access
There is a single step at the entrance door. However there is a portable ramp on request for those requiring step free access. The front door is kept locked and admission is via an intercom to the right of the door and then someone will come to open the door. The ground floor has step free access. When I visited the room was laid out for an event and there were rows of free standing chairs and a large table and chairs at the front for the speakers to sit. The upper floors are only accessible by stairs. The steps are not particularly deep and with a single hand rail on the right hand side going up. With my crutch I found this very manageable although I was slow using the stairs. On the first floor the room was laid out when I visited with free standing tables and chairs. There is a second floor but I didn't go up there.
Toilets
On the ground floor at the back of the main room there is a discreate door which is labelled accessible toilet. Going through the door there is a small room with lockers and kitchen area and the accessible toilet is immediately in front. There is a push button door and a light either red or green to show if it is free or engaged. The accessible toilet contemporary and stylish. It's spacious and clean. There are grab rails and an emergency cord that reached towards the ground. There's nice toiletries and the toilet paper with the label "who gives a c**p".
Staff
Prior to booking the event I had contacted the staff at Clean Prose to ask about their accessibility as it wasn't on their website. Following this they added their accessibility to their website. A couple of days before the event I was notified that the street in front of Clean Prose had road works and they offered to measure the width of the pavement for me if I needed it. I really appreciated their thoughtfulness about my access needs. A member of staff answered the door when I arrived and I was welcomed inside. I was attending the Whodunnit event so there were staff about who were friendly and helpful.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
This is a really lovely, welcoming venue with excellent ground floor access. It's only recently opened and they have put a lot of through into making the venue both attractive and accessible. It's not too big, so not crowded. Also they host literary based type of events so it isn't noisy or overwhelming. It was a real treat to visit and would highly recommend visiting and checking out their events page.
