Venue Description

One of Britain's most iconic and evocative survivors of the English Civil War, partially demolished in 1646 by the Parliamentarians. A favourite haunt for adults and children alike, all ages are captivated by these romantic castle ruins with breath-taking views across Purbeck. Discover 1,000 years of our history as a royal palace and fortress. With fallen walls and secret places, there are tales of treachery and treason around every corner. Spot the 'murder holes' and count the arrow loops. Feel history come to life and see the wildlife that has set up home here.

Accessibility

The route throughout the castle is a cobbled path with a variety of gradients. There is step-free access up to the South West Gatehouse. there are steps from here to the West Bailey. From this point, there are multiple steps, steep slopes, and uneven surfaces. There is an audiotour of the castle, accessible on personal devices via a QR code There is bench seating across the site, and a picnic area in the Outer Bailey. The accessible lodge in the Outer Bailey is level access with benches and space to shelter from the elements. There are walking poles and ear defenders available for loan from the Welcome Centre and Castle Entrance. There is a mobility scooter available to borrow from the Welcome Centre, bookable in advance. Accessible parking and a drop-off point can be found in Castle View car park, BH20 5DR. Please note there is a 15 minute walk from here to the castle entrance along the Woodland Walk. Accessible toilets and baby changing facilities are located in the Welcome Centre and next to the Ticket Office. A Changing Places unit is located at the Welcome Centre.

Step free, accessible toilets are available both in the car park and village square. The toilets are opened with a RADAR key - available to borrow from staff on request. The toilets are alarmed, and have railings for support. The Changing Places unit is available during the opening hours of the Welcome Centre, keys available from staff on request
