Framework Knitters Museum
Chapel Street, Nottingham, NG11 6HE, United Kingdom | 0115 984 6914 | WebsiteVenue Description
The Framework Knitters Museum is a unique surviving example of a 19th century framework knitters’ yard which has been restored as a living history museum. Three furnished cottages show where the manager worked and how a framework knitter and the yard owner lived in Victorian times. There are examples of 18th, 19th and 20th century knitting frames and visitors can see a demonstration of a frame in use. Visitors can try knitting on the vintage circular knitting machines (and take their knitting home with them). There is a laundry outhouse and an example of a long drop toilet together with a collection of hosiery including a pair of Queen Victoria’s stockings. Tours of the museum are offered during opening hours. The reception area houses the ticket office, a café, a small shop and toilets, including a unisex accessible toilet and baby changing facility. There is a garden with seating, a small fenced pond, and an accessible summer house.
Accessibility
The entrance to the museum opens directly on to Chapel Street and access from the street to the museum is level. The entrance door is glazed glass with horizontal markings and opens inwards and outwards. It is manually operated and has an access bell at wheelchair height.
