Overview

Living so close to Gatwick Airport and knowing it so well we find it very easy to navigate around it. It wasn't until a friend asked me a lot of questions about it I decided to do a review. Just knowing what to look for (signage) on the approach road into the South Terminal the information starts for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM). Most of the time we walk to the airport and if we are going to the North Terminal we simply take the inter-terminal shuttle service. It runs every few minutes 24/7 and with a journey time of just two minutes. I personally find Gatwick Airport a very disabled friendly airport and with the fantastic PRM team OCS we travel with confidence.

We don't need to park so never used the parking.

Access

I have never gone anywhere in the airport where I couldn't get in my power wheelchair. For every stairs there is a lift and what is good to see recently added are buttons for the lifts on a pole which is a lot better than the normal buttons at the lift doors. Whether your airline is using a drawbridge or stairs both are easy as a wheelchair user. With a draw bridge I can take my wheelchair to the door of the aircraft and an then transferred from my wheelchair to the aircraft seat with an Eagle Lifter. With steps the airport has two new SideBull Ambulift which takes you to the right hand door where the whole unit rises to the door and the Eagle Lifter is used in the same way. Airports are no different to any other industry when it comes to acronyms and knowing the one you fall under is very helpful. I fall under WCHC, which means, a passenger who is completely immobile who can move about only with the help of a wheelchair.

Toilets

Lots of large wheelchair friendly disabled toilets including two Changing Places toilets one in each terminal.

Staff

Our experience with the staff at the airport has always being great. The main support we get comes from the PRM team OCS and that is always first class.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The photos attached start after the M23 roundabout to the South Terminal and if you look out for them you won't go too far astray.
