Venue Description

These defensive installations are remarkable remnants of war. they were built in 1813-14 to protect British convoys during the Napoleonic Wars, and adapted during later conflicts. The Martello tower, one of only three surviving in Scotland, allows views towards Scapa Flow, a naval anchorage during both world wars. Inside you can learn about military life and the ceilidhs and dances that locals held here. Opening times: 3 Apr to 30 Sept: Mon to Thur, guided tours at 10.15am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. 1 Oct to 3 Apr: Closed

Accessibility

Approach to site The tower is about 15m across a road and grassed area. The barracks and visitor centre are another 200m down a gravel road (which has a cattle grid) and across a grassed area. Visitor Centre Visitor centre is in the barracks. There is a slight threshold into the building, but it is then level. Monument The tower is reached via a set of very narrow and steep metal steps with a handrail. Inside there is a basement level and upper level. Both are reached by a narrow stone stairway. The top of the tower is reached by a metal ladder with a handrail. The barracks are entered over a small threshold and are then on the level.
