Venue Description

Soak up the eerie , powerful atmosphere of an imposing stronghold with a notorious reputation. Look for the garrison's cesspit and seek shelter under the great arch. A 17th century poem says that Hermitage's lord, William De Soulis, was boiled in lead by locals for undertaking black magic rituals. He probably died in the battle of Boroughbridge in England in 1322. Opening times 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Daily, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm). Accessibility

Approach to site The site is 200m from the car park along a path that is mainly surfaced with grass. There are several steep gradients on the route – particularly across the old castle defences. Visitor Centre 100m from the car park on the route to the castle. There is a shallow step in the entry doorway. Monument The area around the outside of the castle is cut grass. The castle entrance has a slight threshold (70mm step). The courtyard is cobbled. The rest of the ground floor is surfaced with gravel. An elevated walkway in the south-west corner is reached via a modern galvanized steel stairway of 13 steps with hand rails on both sides. There is another steel access stair at the north-west corner with one handrail and 21 steep steps. The north-east walkway is reached via 18 stone spiral steps (16 steps are 850mm wide with a handrail and two are 600mm wide).
