Venue Description

Kisimul Castle is closed until further notice to allow for conservation works, but you can get closer to the castle by taking a short boat trip around Castlebay. Boat trips 2 May to 14 September: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10.30am, 11.15am, 12 noon, 1.45pm, 2.30pm, 3.15pm and 4pm. Tours leave from the pontoon in the Marina. Free of charge, but numbers are limited and you will need to prebook your ticket. Boat trips may be subject to cancellation at short notice, particularly in the event of bad weather. Please check our closures page for unexpected closures/cancellation of sailings.

Accessibility

Approach to site A small boat is used to ferry visitors to the Castle Island. Call 01871 810 313 for the sailing times. There are no steps on the mainland jetty but it is steeply sloped. The island jetty has eight stone steps up into the castle. Visitors will need to be confident stepping into and out of the boat. Visitor Centre The shop is within the castle, and so is accessed up the eight steps from the jetty, and then across an uneven courtyard. Monument There are eight steps into the castle courtyard. Once there are uneven steps into all the buildings, and most routes are surfaced with gravel. The tower and walkway are reached by two flights of stone and timber stairs. Inside the tower there is a set of steep timber steps to the first floor and stone steps to the second floor. The castle has several very low doors.
