Accessibility

The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is the UK's only fully water powered railway. Built in 1888, it remains the world's highest and the steepest fully water powered railway and one of three examples left in the world. The railway retains its original Victorian charm and this may present some modern day access challenges. The access paths have a slight gradient but are manageable by most wheelchairs with assistance. The Cliff Top Cafe has level access with no steps and can accommodate wheelchairs. There is a small step onto the Cliff Railway at the top station, and three small steps within each carriage with handrail. Due to the nature of the railway and its Victorian carriages most standard wheelchairs will not pass through the carriages unfolded, the carriages are 540mm wide at the narrowest point and there is restricted seating at busy times. Passengers will need to transfer from and fold their wheelchairs for travel and are personally responsible for loading and unloading wheelchairs from the carriages. Please be respectful of our drivers, they will offer reasonable assistance, but they are not permitted to lift heavy wheelchairs, people or scooters to help facilitate access. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate mobility scooters or larger wheelchairs. Our webiste contains a specific assessibility guide with access photographs.
