Venue Description

Museum of Gloucester tells the story of Gloucester’s origins as a Roman settlement and its subsequent development through the Dark Ages and Medieval period. Housed in a fine Victorian building on Brunswick Road, the Museum is home to a collection of over 750,000 objects of international importance as well as a significant gallery of paintings by famous artists including Richard Wilson, Thomas Gainsborough, John Atkinson Grimshaw and Thomas Dibdin. The Archaeology collection includes the world-famous Birdlip Mirror, impressive Roman tombstones and the Gloucester Tables Set, the oldest complete backgammon set in the world. The museum has ever-changing exhibitions and events, the museum also features ground floor exhibitions and exhibits that promise a much more interactive experience. Highlights include a Roman kitchen playhouse and medieval street and part of the original Roman wall can also be viewed within the museum. Visit our café, serving a range of tea, coffee and cakes, crisps and biscuits as well as an exciting gift shop full of both historical and local products. Accessibility

The entrance to our museum has sloped level access with the path outside - allowing easy access with a wheelchair. The entrance doors are automatic when activated with a push pad which is on the right hand side of the doors. When pushed, both doors open meaning it is wide enough for a wheelchair to get through. The lift is a platform lift. The call button will unlock and open the door, once it is on the needed floor. The doors are 1050mm wide and open outward. The door to exit is on the opposite side to the door entered. There are 2 floors, ground and 1st, the lift will indicate which floor the user is on. The maximum weight for the lift is 400 kg, recommended 2 persons at one time. The lift takes 46 seconds to go from one floor to another.

Toilets

Located on the ground floor by reception. No radar key or permission needed to use the toilets. We have ladies and gentleman toilets along with two unisex disabled toilets with baby changing facilities located in those. Each toilet has: sink, soap dispenser, mirror, hand drier.
