Venue Description

This 15th century castle is most associated with Patrick Maxwell. He transformed the castle into a fine Renaissance mansion, but was notorious for murdering two neighbours ands mistreating his wife. Opening times 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Tue to Sat, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm). Closed for lunch 12 noon to 1pm. 1 Oct to 28 Mar: Closed We recommend booking online to guarantee entry.

Accessibility

Approach to site Visitors approach along a level gravel drive and stone paved path 42m long. Visitor Centre Visitor centre and shop have step free access. Monument The ground floor of the castle has level access and includes the kitchen, wine cellar and bake house. The first and second levels, which include the great hall, the gatehouse, and the gallery are reached by stone stairs with a handrail. They can be uneven. The keep spiral stair has 63 steps and leads to the wallhead. Light levels are low in many areas.
