Scottish Maritime Museum Linthouse Building

Linthouse, Irvine, KA12 8BT, United Kingdom | 01294278283 | Website

Venue Description

Home to Scotland’s national maritime collection, this award winning Museum tells the story of the inventors, craftsmen and explorers who helped shape shipbuilding across the world. Set mostly in and around the Category A listed Linthouse Building that dates back to 1872 when it was first built as the engine manufacturing shop for Alexander Stephen & Sons in Govan. When threatened with demolition for industrial redevelopment, it was removed for preservation in the latter part of the 1980s and reconstructed was completed on the harbourside in Irvine in 1991. Now here inside this magnificent example of Victorian civil engineering you can get hands on with history with interactive exhibits and step back in time in the 1920s shipyard worker’s tenement flat. Browse around the maritime themed gifts in their Boatshop.

Accessibility

The main areas of the Museum are on the flat. Assistance dogs are welcome. A wheelchair is available, please pre-book by emailing visitorservices@scotmaritime.org.uk. Accessible toilets are available, along with a disabled toilet and baby changing facility. Tables and chairs in the Café are free standing. A few steps to be negotiated to access the 1920's Shipworkers flat. Due to the characteristics of the vessel MC Kyles at the pontoons access is difficult for the less able. The Museum has dwell points with seating throughout.
