Venue Description

Shiremoor Adventure Playground is a staffed accessible play facility, run by North Tyneside Council and supported by Shiremoor Adventure Playground Trust, and is open every day of the week. It has open access sessions after school on weekdays and on Saturdays during term time, and sessions for children with additional needs accompanied by a parent/carer and siblings on Sundays and Mondays. Opening times are 11-4 every day during school holidays, Sundays and Mondays are only for children with additional needs (proof must be provided. on first visit - a doctor's letter, note from school, EHCP are all accepted)) though the playground is open to all on other days. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The playground has climbing structures, a pond, swings, bridges and 2 zip wires for children to use. There is also a fire pit and outdoor pizza oven, an allotment area and animals (pigs - Mavis and Nancy - chickens, guinea pigs, tortioises, fish) and there are bikes and roller skates to use, balls to play with and wood to build dens and create whatever children wish. There's a cafe serving snacks and drinks (cash only). The playground is staffed by experienced and qualified playworkers. There is a Changing Places facility and a large indoor hall with a book corner / library. Entry is free but donations are always welcome! NB This is not a childcare facility. If your child need help in the toilet, you need to be there, as playworkers do not engage in personal care.

Accessibility

There are two entrances - a main door with push button opening - and large gates, usually closed but can be opened to enable large vehicles to enter. The playground has a large grassy outdoor area, with tarmac paths for wheelchair users. The allotment area has raised beds and the animal enclosures are accessible for wheelchairs too. There are swings installed which enable children to lie in the cradle if unable to sit upright. We have bikes for all ages which are suitable for a range of children with mobility or visual impairments.
