Accessibility

There is step-free access to the museum entrance. The main door will open automatically (towards you). The width of the door is 103cm. There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of 2cm or below. There are two alternative doors at the entrance, these are manual doors, although they are often left open during the warmer weather. Inside the entrance, there is a reception desk in the shop with a fixed loop hearing assistance system. Staff at this desk handle any purchases for the shop as well as providing visitor information. The café servery is located to the right of the entrance. Café staff can help carry trays of food and drink through to the Courtroom where the seating is located. Tables nearest to the entrance to the room are the most physically accessible - other areas have steps and narrow doorways. This space can be quite noisy at times. There is a lift which provides access to the first floor and basement. With the exception of the historic cells, there is step-free access throughout the rest of the building. Large print text is provided in each exhibition and in most spaces, lighting levels are good (the exception to this is where occasionally exhibits need low light levels for conservation reasons) Videos are subtitled and transcripts are provided. There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor and on the first floor (at the back of the building)
