Discover a historic house and farm on a country estate surrounded by scenic parkland. Temple Newsam is one of the great houses of England, bursting with treasures and tales. With over 500 years of history, it has been home to many colourful characters. Explore this atmospheric house, and marvel at the beautifully crafted interiors. For the last 100 years Temple Newsam has been owned by the City of Leeds for the enjoyment of all. In that time, Temple Newsam’s deep history has been supplemented by one of the greatest collections of fine and decorative arts in Britain. Discover this treasure trove of furniture, ceramics, textiles, silver and wallpaper in a remarkable country house setting. Come along and wander through the historic cobbled yards and outbuildings to find out what working life was like at Home Farm. Get up close to your favourite farmyard friends including lambs, piglets, geese, guinea pigs and loads more! On special event days enjoy crafts, activities and demonstrations suitable for all the whole family. Join our nature trails, perfect for walking, cycling and horse riding. Take a picnic by the lakeside gardens or have some family fun in our adventure playground. Within the Walled Garden discover 800 yards of outstanding herbaceous borders, rose beds and herbs set within the beautifully aged 18th century brick walls, a truly peaceful spot to take a break. Wander through the formal south garden, adjacent to the house this garden reflects 17th century design with beech and box hedges, trained laburnum arches and a pleached hornbeam walk.

Accessibility

A large proportion of the house is fully accessible. Some things to note are that: benches and seats are available for visitors to use around the house. A lift provides access to all floors for wheelchair users. The lift can accommodate one wheelchair at any time. There is no wheelchair access to the south wing of the house or the cellars. Mobility scooters are not allowed within the house. However you can request a wheelchair from staff on arrival – Subject to availability. The grounds, gardens and walled gardens are fully accessible. Some things to note are that: if you are using push wheelchairs, you may struggle on some of the gravel/cobbled areas, particularly in Home Farm and the stables courtyard. The walled garden is fully accessible but the pathways are fairly steep in parts. Electric wheelchairs must be left outside the café and estate office. Many trails and walks are accessible but steep in parts. There is a fully accessible playground next to Home Farm. The first floor display areas of Home Farm are not accessible but interpretation is displayed on the ground floor.

Toilets

Accessible toilets are available in the house, stables courtyard and in a fully accessible Changing Places facility next to the accessible playground. Facilities in the changing places toilets include an emergency alarm, a fire alarm with a flashing light, rise and fall sink, bed and hoist. The Changing Places toilets and stables courtyard toilet are RADAR key operated.
