Overview

My partner was doing a platelet donation in Manchester City Centre that day, and so I went with him using my electric wheelchair so I could go do some stuff on my own in the Arndale. When he finished, we agreed to try Tim Hortons for our first time. As we placed our order on the electric order point, I needed the loo. There is a lift in store, as well as stairs, but no signs saying where the toilets were. The lift was also broken down because we tried to call it, but there was nothing happening. My partner went to the front counter to report it, I'd wet myself 😬 and I decided nope, I'm going to brave the stairs. So, I took my walking stick out of the pocket on the back of my wheels and headed up. The toilets have an electronic keypad, and the only way to get in is with a code on the receipt. My partner was downstairs, and he had the receipt. I'm thankful that there was a woman already up there with her order, and she put the code in. Now, I used the loo, cleaned myself up as best I could, and went back down. My partner was livid. The worker he spoke to, telling him that the lift wasn't working, very flatly responded, "yeah, it's broken," before going back to packing an order. My partner didn't eat his meal, nor drink his drink, and he left them on the table out of spite. He tried to fill out a guest experience survey for the store, and became more angry because the receipt didn't say exactly where the code required was. I'd emailed the area manager of that location, and the response was, "the lift was broken by some youths a couple of months back. We're sorry you had this issue." Seriously? A couple of months back? In my email, I wrote how people who need to use wheelchairs are not comfortable visiting this store, and suggested that they should have had a disabled toilet on the ground floor, or at least signs pointing where the toilets are, and that the lift was out of order.
