This is where some of Scotland's earliest Christians worshipped about 1,500 years ago. According to legend, St Ninian founded the priory at Whithorn in the early 400s. The Latinus Stone, now displayed here, was raised soon after and remains Scotland's oldest Christian monument. Visitor Centre The museum has step-free access and is level. Approach to the site The museum and priory are approached along a tarmac road and pavements from the public parking. Monument From the museum the priory site is about 20m along a tarmac path. There is a narrow wooden gate into the priory grounds. The ruined nave of the Cathedral Church sits on a small but steep hill. All entrances into the nave have at least one step and are approached across grass. The Vaults have numerous level changes in them and are accessed down historic stone steps. There are no windows and light levels can be very low. The floor inside the vaults is gravel.
