Venue Description

Then visit the Winding House, the museum for Caerphilly County Borough. With fascinating and engaging exhibitions, our remarkable Victorian winding engine, an exciting events programme and "the best cup of coffee in the Valleys", there's plenty for all to enjoy! And what's more, admission is free!

Accessibility

Access to the entrance is via a ramp or 3 wide steps with tactile hazard warning paving with a handrail to one side and the middle. Both lead to the main doors which are automatic and open outwards. The reception desk is designed to be a low height and has an under-counter space at one side for wheelchair users to gain access to the person on reception. The Winding Engine is accessed via a wide 'push' open door and ramp. The galleries are accessed via wide ‘push’ open doors. Access to the First Floor is via a standard lift or a curved staircase with handrail. Seating is provided throughout.

Toilets

The Accessible toilet is unisex with baby changing facilities. The door is pulled open from the outside and has a lock on it.The tap is lever operated. There are vertical and horizontal wall rails to the left of the toilet. A drop-down grab rail can be lowered from a vertical to horizontal position to the right of the toilet. There is an alarm call cord (red) which alerts Museum Reception in case of emergencies. A pull-down baby changing table is located on the wall furthest from the toilet.

All staff have completed Dementia Friend training and various council initiatives for employee awareness.

There is a large grassy area near the large overflow car park which can accessed from the main road. From there, it is a short distance (5-10 minutes) over a ramped pedestrian footbridge to the museum.
