A Seaside Adventure with Euan's Guide!

Euan’s Guide team members and Ambassadors at North Berwick Beach wheelchairs.

At the end of May the Euan’s Guide team, along with some of our intrepid Ambassadors took on a new adventure - exploring North Berwick! We were Working alongside North Berwick Beach Wheelchairs and the Scottish Seabird Centre  we explored the beach in powered and manual Beach wheelchairs, the weather was kind to us on the day as well, which, as we all know, is a a rare occurrence in Scotland!  We had sun sand and sea to make it the ideal day at the beach.

The day started with coffees at the Scottish Seabird Centre and was a great chance for volunteers to catch up in person after a long spell of having to meet each other virtually and see each other over a computer screen during the pandemic.

The Scottish Seabird Centre team then gave us an introduction to some of the sea life and sea birds that you might find on the beach, including getting up close and personal with some of the sea creatures themselves! These included crabs, whelks, and different types of seaweed.

Then it was time to get out onto the beach itself… Our volunteers were able to test out different types of beach wheelchairs including the X8 Powerchairs which were able to tackle the sand with ease! There was also the option of manual beach wheelchairs which are a great way to explore as you can get closer to the water and they are the best option if you fancy dipping your toes in the sea.

One volunteer commented “the nature has previously been inaccessible to me - the fact that the Scottish Seabird Centre could bring it to me, was amazing! I haven't been on the beach in 20 years and never expected to be able to, it just wouldn't have occurred to me to give this a go without this event.”

Another volunteer told us “We loved the Seabird Centre tour and it was also accessible to people that weren’t able to get onto the beach. It’s easily been a decade since we’ve been on the beach, we definitely wouldn't have done without Euan’s Guide – the fact that we did it as a group made it possible and removed anxiety. Will now be checking out the other Beach Wheelchair locations!”

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in this event. Including the Beach Wheelchair volunteers at North Berwick and the staff at the Scottish Seabird Centre for making the event possible.
