Venue Description

This splendid ruin was once the luxurious Renaissance home and pleasure gardens of Regent Morton, at the time Scotland's most powerful man. Aberdour was originally built as a fortified residence in the 1100s, making it one of the oldest stones in the country. The fine painted ceiling dates from the 1600s. Opening times: 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Daily, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm). 1 Oct to 28 Mar: Daily except Thur & Fri, 10am to 4pm (last entry 3.15pm). Closed for lunch 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

Accessibility

Approach to site From the station car park there are two routes. The shorter route (approx 150m) involves a flight of 25 wooden stairs with a handrail. The longer route is relatively level (approx 500m). Visitor centre Access into the reception area is level. Monument The ground floor includes stables, kitchen, store and tower house. There are two steps down into the kitchen, which has a cobbled floor. Upper levels, including the hall and apartments are reached via spiral stairs (with a single handrail). Small steps, raised thresholds and low level walls are found throughout the castle. Surroundings The castle has a walled garden with level access. Its paths are a mixture of compacted gravel and cobbled surfaces. A terraced garden, orchard and dovecot are accessed via steps or a steep grass bank. No paths are marked, and the garden is grass throughout. Café & shop The café has step-free access, but a narrow door (approx 1m) with a sharp turn. The shop has level access. Special Features A border in the garden has stronglyscented flowers.
