Venue Description

Brixton House is a modern theatre in the heart of Brixton. A home of creativity and expression for everyone. We tell stories that inspire us and our communities to work together to create a better world.

Accessibility

Our House is fully accessible and offers a range of access performances. Brixton House aims to provide audio described, captioned, and BSL performances across all main house productions. We also provide Touch Tours for all patrons before our audio-described performances.

Accessible Performances

Audio-described performances Audio-described performances are for people who are blind or partially sighted. During audio-described performances, you will receive a live verbal commentary of the show providing information on the visual elements including movement and expressions of the production, as it happens live in the theatre. If you book for an audio-described performance, you will receive an invite to participate in a pre-show touch tour. These usually take place up to an hour before the start of the show. Captioned performances Captioned performances are for people who are D/deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing. Captioned performances work similarly to how subtitled television works. The captions are prepared in advance and the text runs at the same time and speed of the actors on stage. British Sign Language (BSL) performances BSL Interpreted shows offer a signed interpretation of the text sung and/or spoken by the actors onstage. They are delivered by a highly trained BSL interpreter. Relaxed environment performances Relaxed environment performances are specially adapted performances for those who benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere whilst in the theatre. They provide a supportive environment which allows for noise and movement in the auditorium and allows re-entry if audience members need time out during the performance. There will be ambient lighting in the auditorium throughout the show and the show will be adapted to consider the following. What changes are made to a Relaxed Performance? Slight changes to the sound, lowering the volume and reducing any loud effects. We slow down any flashing/strobe lighting effects where possible. Elements of surprise will be reduced to a minimum. The house lights will always be on at a low level in the auditorium. Haze will be reduced. For anyone who needs to leave the show, we have a small, quiet chill-out area just outside the auditorium. You can return to the show when you are ready. It is fine if you need to leave and return several times. Most importantly we ask everyone to be tolerant and accepting of the fact that some people may express enjoyment of the show in different ways; the attitude to noise, singing along to the show, and movement is relaxed, we ask anyone in our audience to be supportive of this.
