Venue Description

Enjoy some peace among the magnificent ruins of this sacred place, which dates to the 1200s. Admire the glorious west front, the sumptuous decorations and the atmospheric chapter house. The Earl of Buchan burned the cathedral in 1390, and during the ferment leading to the Protestant Reformation of 1560 it was the scene of a violent attack. Discover the cathedral’s remarkable carved stone collection on display in the towers, including the colourfully lit effigy of Bishop Archibald, and enjoy spectacular rooftop views. Opening times 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Daily, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 3.30pm). 1 Oct to 28 Mar: Daily, 10am to 4pm (last entry 3pm). We recommend booking online to guarantee entry.

Accessibility

Approach to site The site is entered from the street over tarmac and paved pavements. Visitor centre The shop is has a small threshold step. Monument Access into the cathedral is down six stone steps with a central handrail and up a further flight of four stone steps. There are numerous small level changes and archaeological remains throughout the site. The surface is mainly cut grass. There are stone steps without a handrail down into the chapter house. The tower viewing points are accessed by narrow stone spiral staircases with a handrail most of the way up. The final 10-15 steps of each tower are without a handrail. Light levels on the stairs can be very low.
