Venue Description

Penlee House is an art gallery and museum in Penzance, Cornwall. Situated in sub-tropical gardens, the gallery hosts a programme of special exhibitions featuring work by artists of the Newlyn School and the Lamorna Group (1880s-1930s). The museum was founded in 1839 and covers 6,000 years of history in West Cornwall, from Penwith's awe-inspiring archaeological sites to more recent social history. The Orangery Café has a range of hot and cold drinks, light lunches and afternoon teas using local produce.

Accessibility

There is level, ramped or lift access to all areas and an adapted toilet with baby changing facilities. A loan wheelchair is also available for use in the gallery. the lift is located in the lobby to the left of the Admissions desk, close to the Unisex Accessible Toilet. The lift takes you up one floor to the upstairs Galleries and the Museum. The lift door is 86 cms wide. The lift is 110 cms wide. It is 140 deep. The lift buttons have raised numbers . There is a wheelchair lift to take visitors from Gallery 5 to the museum galleries. It is not designed to take motorised wheelchairs or scooters. It has a maximum load of 150 kgs (approximately 23 stone). The width of the wheelchair lift is 72 cms. The depth is 130 cms. The exit door is 98 cms wide. It will open when pushed. The ground floor Galleries’ floors are made of wood. Paintings are generally hung at a height of 1.2 metres from the floor. The doorways between the Galleries are 97 cms wide. There are four Galleries on the ground floor, and a hallway area. The lighting in some areas is low level, depending on whether the pictures are light-sensitive, such as watercolours. PenFriend Audio Guides and headsets are available to borrow for blind and partially-sighted visitors. LED torches and magnifying glasses also available.
