Venue Description
It was in this simple sandstone house in a quiet Dumfries street that Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, spent the last years of his life. He died here in 1796 at the age of just thirty seven. The house shows us how the poet and his family lived in the late 18th century, filled with many of his belongings and manuscripts and is now a place of pilgrimage for Burns enthusiasts from around the world.
Accessibility
There is not level access for wheelchairs. Four steps with handrails lead from the cobbled street to the door of Robert Burns House. Two rooms can be viewed on the ground floor. There is a narrow stair with a handrail to four more rooms on the first floor. Although many artefacts are displayed in glass cases, we have a range of handling artefacts for visitors to connect with the story of the house. Our front-of-house colleagues will be very pleased to welcome visitors and describe and discuss the artefacts and manuscripts in display cases for visitors with sight loss. We have a trail for families based on the children of Robert Burns and costume and hats based on the style of the 1790s for visitors to try on. Our colleagues have had basic training in deafness awareness and diversity awareness. They will be pleased to welcome you and do their best to assist visitors.
