Overview
We were greeted by a retired policeman who was very welcoming, friendly, and had a good sense of humour. He engaged really well with our service users who have additional support needs, and gave us an interesting introduction about how the police started in Glasgow along with some background history. After the introduction, we explored the museum at our own pace. It’s small but full of fascinating information and displays. We especially enjoyed seeing the old police weapons and the variety of police uniforms and hats from different countries around the world. The only downside was the lift — it’s very old and quite outdated, which made it feel a bit intimidating to use. We decided to take the stairs instead (two small flights up to the first floor). Overall, it was a friendly and enjoyable visit with plenty of history and charm.
Transport & Parking
We used public transport via bus which took us directly from dalmarnock to Glasgow cross, it was only a 2 minute walk from there. We had a look at the parking and saw that there are on street bay paid parking which is free on Sundays. The nearest carpark is Q-Park multi-storey car park and is located in Albion Street, which is next door to the museum.
Access
There is a buzzer entry system which is low enough for wheelchair users, if you buzz the police museum and ask for assistance a staff member will come down to help you. The elevator is very outdated and requires you to slide the door open and close fully manually for it to operating which can be difficult to use. The rest of the museum is on one floor with enough space for people do walk around or for wheelchair users to get around easily.
Toilets
They had toilets but not accessible toilets
Staff
The staff was retired policemen who were very welcoming and enthusiastic, they took the time to get to know where we all came from and had very good and a lot of information to tell us about the history and spoke in a clear and easy way for us to understand and loud enough. They were there to answer any questions we had, opened the door for us upon arrival and when leaving.
