Venue Description

The Tyneside Cinema is the North East of England’s only full-time independent first-run specialised cinema. Situated in Newcastle upon Tyne it holds a unique place in the history of moving image in the UK as the last surviving Newsreel cinema operating as a cinema and today it is also a free screen heritage attraction engaging the public with the heritage of Newsreels 363 days a year.

Accessibility

Our refurbishment and redevelopment in 2006-2008 ensured that the Tyneside Cinema is now more accessible than ever before. We have a lift to all floors, high contrast signage throughout the building, complete with braille, accessible toilet facilities on floors 1, 2 and 3 and hearing loops installed in the Box Office and Tyneside Bar. We use the Phonic infra-red headset system to provide amplified sound in our screens, and each of the Tyneside’s Cinema's screens have power assisted doors and dedicated spaces for wheelchair users.

Toilets

Accessible toilet facilities are available on floors 2 and 3 and also in the Tyne Bar cafe on the ground floor of the building. To ensure facilities are always available for our disabled customers, our accessible toilets are locked using the National Key Scheme Radar Key system. A returnable key is available from the Box Office, Intermezzo, the Tyneside Coffee Rooms and the Tyneside Bar, and our Customer Service team also carry keys for these cubicles. Radar keys are available for purchase from http://www.radar.org.uk (VAT-free for disabled people).
