Venue Description

The American Museum takes you on a journey through the history of America, from its early settlers to the twentieth century. With its remarkable collection of folk and decorative arts, the Museum shows the diverse and complex nature of American traditions. The only museum of Americana outside the United States, it was founded to bring American history and cultures to the people of Britain and Europe.

Accessibility

The main museum building has a lift to all 3 visitor floors and is access by a permanent ramp into the reception area. Some internal areas of the main building have low lighting. Entrance to the Cafe and Gardens is via level tarmac (some cobbles to front of Cafe). The Stables building (used for some events and exhibitions) has a wheelchair accessible platform list.

Toilets

There is a public toilet for disabled visitors at the Exhibition Gallery building • -From the main entrance to the public toilet, there is level access. There is a permanent ramp. • The route is 700mm wide, or more. • The toilet door is 700mm wide. • The direction of transfer onto the toilet is to the right. • The toilet has handrails and an easy lock

Staff

All our ticket office staff have undertaken Welcome All and Welcome Host Gold training. They also provide access to our Tramper and Golf Buggy which can provide individual and small group access to areas of the museum gardens. We are also working towards all staff and volunteers becoming Dementia Friends.

Assistance dog facilities

Assistance dog exercise facilities

Assistance dogs can be exercised 'off lead' in our parkland area though caution needed at times as sheep sometimes graze there.

Other assistance dog facilities

Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the museum and gardens. Water bowls and shaded picnic area can be found next to our Cafe.
