Venue Description

Our mission is to welcome audiences to Dublin’s oldest, newest theatre. Our policy is to provide an enjoyable, affordable, quality experience, challenging & engaging you, in a friendly, feel-good atmosphere. Smock Alley was the first Theatre Royal built in Dublin. John Ogilby opened it in 1662 as part of the Restoration of the British monarchy and King Charles II in 1660, along with the London’s Drury Lane (1662) and the Lincoln’s Inn Fields (1661). It was the first custom-built theatre in the city and still remains in substantially the same form, making it one of the most important sites in European theatre history.

Accessibility

Disabled access to the theatre is through the Boys’ School theatre space. There is an entrance to the Boys’ School at street level which has a ramp that we can place out when needed. The Boys’ School has one long ramp going up and around all the way to the top of the building (3 floors). This ramp allows access to all theatre spaces – the Main Space, the Boys’ School and the Banquet Hall. The Main Space theatre can also be accessed directly from street level.

Accessible Performances

Accessible are sometimes available to book, depending on the show and the visiting company.

Toilets

Disabled toilets are located in The Main Space.
