Overview
Not the most accessible boozer in Leith, but a great place for a hangover lunch and a hair of the dog.
Transport & Parking
Taxi can get pretty close to the entrance. The road is cobbled, which can be a pain in the bum (literally when you're bumping along it!). Buses to Commercial Street. I think there might be Blue Badge parking at Commercial Quay, but again the access road to the pub is cobbled.
Access
There's a wide raised ledge (about two inches high) to get in and you'll need someone to hold the (large) door open for you. If you want to venture farther back than the front bar, you might have to do some nifty manouevring if you're on wheels. The cosy back bar is pretty cluttered with heavy furniture and narrow awkwardly angled passes. The very back bit (I think they call it 'the pontoon') is much more spacious and forgiving to wheels.
Toilets
Although there is an accessible loo (with grab rails), the door is really heavy and the loo is too small to turn around in if you're on wheels. This means that if you went in forward, you'll have to exit backwards, on an uneven floor, with limited visibility, while trying to hold the heavy door open. In addition I got stuck on something (a gap in floorboards maybe?) while the heavy door tried to close on me and the baby change thingy attached to the back of the door brained me. Great hand dryer!
Staff
Pleasant and great at holding doors open if they could see you needed help.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Very nice and extensive menu. A cosy retreat from a Leith winter. Lovely biscuits with your cuppa. I don't think there's much they can do about the loo, but making the door less heavy would really help. I just wish they'd sort out the apostrophes on the website!
