The Golden Acorn

The Golden Acorn Hotel was opened in 1963. It was renamed The Albany, 20 years later, in keeping with the newly adopted heraldic theme. The Albany Herald is one of the officers of the Court of the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, which controls the granting of arms in Scotland. Most of the first phase of the town centre, including the Golden Acorn Hotel, was completed and occupied during 1963, and formally opened on 2 December 1964. For several years the hotel became the hub of the town's social life. The second phase included the 'Kingdom Centre', which was opened in 1976. Phase II of the town centre opened in 1982. JD Wetherspoon aqquired the property in 1998 by which time it had reverted its name back to The Golden Acorn. As well as a busy town centre pub, which serves food & drink all day, The Golden Acorn is also a 26 bedroom hotel. This had a £1 million refurbishment in 2013 with all the hotel bedrooms & public areas fully refurbished.
